Rhinoplasty in Atlanta

Every nose is different and so is every patient, which means that rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, must be tailored to the needs of each individual. Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Asaf Yalif understands this concept and works closely with every rhinoplasty patient he sees in Alpharetta, Woodstock, and Roswell, GA, to provide the best, most natural-looking results possible.

Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a “nose job”, is one of the most common plastic surgeries in the Atlanta area because it can dramatically enhance a person’s appearance. Women and men choose rhinoplasty for several reasons, including improving a crooked nose, removing a hump or bump, reducing nasal width, narrowing the nasal tip and/or adjusting its projection, and altering the size of the nostrils.

Ideal Candidates for Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is among the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the U.S. The patients considering cosmetic nose surgery at Y Plastic Surgery include individuals with a range of concerns about the size or shape of their noses.

The best candidates for nose surgery:

  • Have cosmetic nose issues they want transformed
  • Have realistic expectations for their outcomes
  • Desire a long-term change
  • Desire a natural look

Younger persons thinking about getting rhinoplasty ask if they have to be a certain age to undergo the procedure. A patient’s nose should be fully developed and that usually happens by age 16 for girls and at 17 or 18 for males.

What Is Involved in Rhinoplasty Surgery?

An outpatient procedure, rhinoplasty is performed while a patient is under general anesthesia at an accredited facility. Depending on the technique used and the patient’s needs, surgery can last 2 to 4 hours. There are 2 types of nose surgery procedures: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty, or external rhinoplasty, involves the plastic surgeon making a small incision on the underside of the nose between the nostrils to offer better access to the lower and middle parts of the nose. The surgeon can then manipulate tissue, skin, and bone as needed. The placement of the incisions allows for minimal scarring. Open rhinoplasty is used for more complex nose surgeries.

Closed Rhinoplasty

With closed rhinoplasty, or endonasal rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside of the nostrils. This technique is common for less complex surgeries, such as when the nose already has a good shape and isn’t considered too wide or too long. Due to the placement of the incisions, there is no visible scarring.

Anticipated Rhinoplasty Recovery & Results

After completing the procedure, Dr. Yalif stabilizes the rhinoplasty patient’s nose with splints made of a soft material. He removes the splints at a follow-up appointment scheduled for the day after the surgery, when he also places external dressings on the nose that remain for another 2 days. Even though most patients experience some discomfort during the initial recovery period, many are surprised by the low level of pain. Dr. Yalif does not routinely use nasal packing for rhinoplasty patients.

It’s important to avoid bleeding during the initial 48 hours after the procedure, so patients shouldn’t blow their noses, bend over, or lift anything heavy enough that would cause them to strain. Keep the head elevated and don’t take medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin).

Plan on taking a week off from work or school. Bruising and swelling are common, but typically subside after a couple of weeks. Residual swelling can last several months to a year, which is why the final results of the surgery will emerge gradually. The nose repositions and evolves during the first 9 months to a year, after which you’ll see the final outcome of a beautifully shaped, positioned, and proportionate nose.
