Chin Augmentation
A chin that appears to be too short or too small can affect the proportions of the face and disrupt overall facial harmony, and the same is true with a chin that is too large. However, Y Plastic Surgery’s triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Asaf Yalif can transform the chin with mentoplasty, or chin surgery. During a chin reduction surgery, Dr. Yalif manipulates the chin bone to make a too-large chin smaller. When chin enhancement is necessary, a medical-grade implant can be placed into the chin to achieve a more proportionate appearance. Chin augmentation at Y Plastic Surgery can also be performed in conjunction with other facial surgeries, such as rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or a facelift for enhanced results.
Ideal Candidates
The best candidates for chin augmentation or reduction surgery:
- Have a weak (too short) chin due to genetics or trauma
- Have a nose that appears too large
- Desire a more proportionate look with greater facial harmony
- Desire a more distinctive profile
What to Expect
During chin surgery, the patient is placed under general anesthesia, and the procedure is performed at an accredited surgical facility as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Yalif makes a small incision either inside the mouth or under the chin, and the implant, which is made of biocompatible, medical-grade materials, is placed carefully into the incision. After the implant is placed, the incision is stitched up. If the incision is made in the mouth, the patient will experience no visible scarring. For incisions under the chin, the scar will be carefully hidden to avoid detection. The entire surgery takes about one hour to complete.

Right after chin augmentation surgery, a dressing will be applied to the chin where it should remain for three to four days. Patients can expect some pain, tenderness, and swelling. Patients may also experience a tight, stretched sensation following surgery, but these symptoms usually go away after one week. After a few weeks, the swelling will subside and patients will be able to see the results of their surgery. The implant will look and feel like normal bone and will have the same consistency as the patient’s natural tissue, giving it a natural appearance.
Define Your Profile
A weak chin not only makes your profile look weak, but it can also make your nose appear to be large and disproportionate. While some patients believe they need nose surgery, chin augmentation surgery could be the perfect solution to achieve full facial harmony and symmetry.
