Scar Revision

Scar revision surgery by our triple board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Asaf Yalif, greatly diminishes the appearance of scars and elevates confidence. Scars can come in a variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and forms all over the body. When they are on the face, scars can be especially noticeable and can decrease confidence and increase anxiety. Regardless of how a scar occurred or where it is, Dr. Yalif uses all of the tools at his disposal to transform the appearance of the unattractive tissue, and he commonly uses the surgery to help patients who have scars as a result of trauma, accident, previous surgery, cancer, or more.

Not only is scar revision surgery used to make a scar more cosmetically appealing, but it can also help alleviate pain and restore function where nerve damage has occurred and/or sensation has been lost. A scar is often a reminder of a traumatic accident or incident that caused it, so it’s critically important for many patients to diminish its appearance. At Y Plastic, Reconstructive, and Hand Surgery, we can discuss all the options for scar revision surgery at a private consultation at either of our offices in Woodstock or Roswell, GA.

Ideal Candidates

The best candidates for scar revision surgery:

  • Have scars as a result of trauma, accident, previous surgery, or cancer
  • Have a loss of function, such as nerve damage
  • Have extensive cosmetic issues due to the appearance of the scar
  • Desire a long-term solution
  • Desire a natural look

What to Expect

Various types of scars call for different techniques. When scars arise from a problem with a previous surgery, the original incision can be re-opened and the skin can be moved around to minimize the appearance of the scar. In some cases, the scar can be moved to a different location to make it less visible. With raised scars, dermabrasion and laser skin resurfacing procedures can be used to remove the upper layers of skin to make the scar smoother and more even with the rest of the area. Keloid scars, which are raised, can be surgically removed to improve the appearance. Depending on the type of scar and its condition, the plastic surgeon will use general or local anesthesia. The surgery is considered outpatient, where the patient can return home the same day.

Anticipated Results

After surgery, pain, discomfort, redness, swelling, and bruising can be expected. Stitches are usually removed in the few days following surgery. Strenuous exercise and activities will need to be avoided for the first week or so. In addition, patients should keep the head elevated while sleeping. There will be multiple follow-up appointments so the surgeon can ensure the treatment site is healing properly. It can take up to a full year or more for the scar to fully heal and for the patient to notice full results.
