Gynecomastia Treatment
Gynecomastia is a condition that affects many men, and is characterized by an abundance of breast tissue, resulting in feminine-looking breasts, sometimes called “man boobs.” At our Alpharetta, Roswell, and Woodstock, GA, practice, gynecomastia sufferers undergo male breast reduction surgery by Dr. Asaf Yalif, a triple board-certified plastic surgeon who tailors the procedure to create more masculine contours for male chests.
Ideal Breast Lift Candidates
It is not clear what causes excess breast tissue in men, but it is more common than you might think. This excess breast tissue can undermine the confidence of teenaged boys and men and limit their lifestyles. Dr. Yalif’s patients tell him that they avoid removing their shirts at beaches or pools, participating in active sports, and have trouble finding shirts that fit. Ideal male breast reduction candidates:
- Are at a stable, healthy BMI
- Have fat and breast tissue that resist diet and exercise
- Have good skin quality (not excess, stretched skin)
Because medical conditions other than gynecomastia can cause the development of excess breast tissue, you should have a doctor rule out any underlying health issues before scheduling gynecomastia surgery. As with any elective surgery, patients should be in good overall health.
Understanding Your Procedure
Dr. Yalif creates a surgical plan based on the consultation, which involves both a physical exam and a discussion about your cosmetic goals. He typically combines surgical removal of excess, dense tissue with liposuction of residual fat. To remove breast tissue using surgical excision, Dr. Yalif makes an well-concealed incision—usually around the areola (the darker circle of skin that surrounds the nipple). He then removes any excess fat with liposuction to create a smooth contour.

After surgery, Dr. Yalif bandages the patient’s chest and fits him with a special compression garment that helps minimize swelling and maintain the new contours. These garments should be worn at all times. Patients should rest and avoid significant upper body movement for at least 3 days. Most patients return to work in 7 to 10 days and resume low-impact exercise in 2 to 3 weeks. Dr. Yalif will go over specific recovery instructions and any prescribed medication during pre-op appointments.
Results from male breast reduction are usually seen by 3 months after the surgery when the swelling has subsided. It may take 6 to 12 months for the skin to tighten and conform to the new chest shape. The results of male breast reduction surgery will be permanent as long as the patient maintains a healthy, stable weight, but natural signs of aging will continue.
